Doria's Story
I wanted to send you a copy of this certificate so you can see how far I have come. That’s right, I made the Dean’s list for the Spring Quarter and expect to be certified as a court reporter in a few months. Remember how I was close to dropping out of school when I came to Genesis House?! I really like the work and though it is a struggle getting Jaden to the sitter and finding time to do homework after he goes to bed it will all be worth it when I can get a nicer apartment and provide a better life for both of us. Maybe someday I’ll be able to achieve my dream and study to become a lawyer – I haven’t given up on that thought!
Thank you for being there when I needed someone to believe in me and set my feet on the right path. I love my family but I knew I couldn’t rely on them for help. You guys were always there cheering me on and giving me the support I needed. Jaden soon will be five years old. He’s a bright and very active little boy who loves school and keeps me hopping. He loves to read books and play ball. When school is finished I’ll stop by so you can see how tall and handsome he has grown.
Sincerely, Doria*
Brenda's Story
The hardest thing I have ever had to do was to tell my parents, midway through my freshman year at college, that I was pregnant. My father found Genesis for me. I had no idea what to expect. I felt very comfortable right away. We discussed my options and, with my parents support, I decided to make an adoption plan for my child. This was the hardest thing that I would have to do in my life but I knew that in my heart it was the best thing for my child. I continued meeting with Carole at Genesis throughout my pregnancy and really looked forward to my counseling sessions. We talked about many of the problems I was facing, even those that had nothing to do with my pregnancy. It really helped me both in my personal life and my life at college. I decided that I wanted to meet the adoptive parents and felt so much better once we met. They were exactly the kind of people I wanted to raise my son.
I returned to college in the fall and found that this experience had changed me considerably. I was so grateful for the help I had received at Genesis and the people I had met there. And decided that I wanted to help people like they had helped me. I had been majoring in criminal justice but I added a major in social service hoping that someday I will be in a position to really impact someone’s life, the way Genesis changed mine. Last spring I needed an internship for college and naturally, I called Carole to see if I could do my internship at Genesis. I did and found it very rewarding. I also applied for a scholarship that is available through Genesis and was selected to receive a portion of the grant money in 2006.
My involvement with Genesis has changed my life in so many positive ways that it is difficult to put it all into words. Every moment that I spent at Genesis I felt comfortable and could never thank them enough for changing my life. Today I am a better person because I have met so many great people at Genesis. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Sincerely, Brenda*
